Is the Release Layer System (RLS) the New Benchmark in Helmet Safety?

In a recently published peer-reviewed article in the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, a leading journal in the field of biomechanics that’s published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the study provides the first comprehensive, independently validated evidence of RLS effectiveness in reducing rotational brain injury risk across multiple cycling helmet types and impact conditions.


Located on the outside of the helmet, RLS activates on impact: an outer polycarbonate panel releases, allowing an array of tiny polycarbonate ball bearings to roll freely, dispersing and transforming rotational energy before it reaches the head. Unlike internal systems such as MIPS, RLS operates from the exterior, meaning it is impacted first and can engage across the full surface of the helmet.


To illustrate the significance of these findings in practical terms, a cyclist wearing a conventional road helmet in a real-world crash carries an estimated 64% probability of sustaining a serious brain injury. With RLS, that figure drops to 9%.
